Yankees Face Elimination After Four-Error Disaster Against Rays
The New York Yankees committed four errors in a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, leaving them down 0-2 and facing elimination in the ALDS.

Defensive Meltdown in St. Petersburg
The New York Yankees knew they needed to play clean baseball to beat the Tampa Bay Rays. Instead, they delivered a defensive disaster in Game 2 of the American League Division Series. The Yankees committed four errors, including three in the very first inning, on their way to a 5-2 loss on Monday.
The defeat leaves New York trailing 0-2 in the series. They now head home for Game 3 on Wednesday facing elimination.
The trouble started immediately for Yankees ace Cam Schlittler. Third baseman Ryan McMahon flubbed a routine groundball in the first inning. Soon after, rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. flipped a ball to second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. for a routine out. Chisholm tried to turn an unlikely double play, but his wild throw sailed past first base, allowing the first run to score.
A replay review then charged catcher Austin Wells with catcher's interference, marking the team's third error of the inning.
Offense Struggles Despite Rice's Historic Night
New York's offense could not make up for the defensive blunders. Rays starter Freddy Peralta was perfect through the first three innings.
The Yankees finally got on the board in the fourth inning when Ben Rice hit a leadoff home run. Rice added another solo home run in the eighth inning, becoming the first Yankee ever to have multiple multi home run games in a single postseason.
However, those two hits were almost all the Yankees could muster. Meanwhile, the defense fell apart again in the fifth inning. Lombard made a wild throw to first base for the team's fourth error of the night.
Schlittler was pulled in the fourth inning after allowing four runs, two of them earned, on six hits. "I just didn't have my stuff today," Schlittler said.
Looking to Bounce Back
The Yankees now find themselves in a difficult position. Last year, the Toronto Blue Jays had them on the brink and ended their season in four games.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone remains hopeful his team can turn things around. "We've got to get over it," Boone said. "We've responded all year to difficult times, and we've got to do that again."
