Yankees Regular Season Ends Early in Rainout Ahead of Boston Series

Rain Stops Play in New York

The final game of the regular season between the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees on Sunday was canceled. Sustained rain in New York forced officials to call off the game about three hours after its scheduled start time of 1:05 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Yankees never announced their starting lineup for the game. This cancellation means New York did not play all 162 games in a non shortened season for the first time since 2002.

Wild Card Series and Injury Concerns

New York now turns its focus to the postseason. The Yankees will host the Boston Red Sox in an American League Wild Card Series starting on Tuesday.

Cam Schlittler is set to start Game 1 for the Yankees. He will be followed in the rotation by Max Fried and Gerrit Cole.

However, the team faces a major injury concern. Star player Aaron Judge appears doubtful for the wild card series because of a calf injury. As of Sunday, Judge has only been able to do plyometric exercises and run on a treadmill.

Season Statistics

The Yankees finished their regular season with a 93-67 record. In each of the previous two seasons, they finished with a 94-67 record. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, no team has ever finished with the exact same record in three consecutive seasons.

In terms of attendance, the Yankees drew 3,297,154 fans across 79 home dates this year. This was a decrease from last year, when they drew 3,392,659 fans over 80 dates. The team also saw a drop in sellouts, recording 12 home sellouts compared to 20 last season.

Orioles Season Review

The Baltimore Orioles finished their season with a 79-82 record. This was the team's first year under manager Craig Albernaz. While it is a losing record, it is an improvement from their 75-87 finish last year.

The Orioles have now suffered consecutive losing seasons. This follows a successful stretch where the team won a total of 275 games from 2022 to 2024.
