Record night for Ashby

Aaron Ashby made history on Tuesday night in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Milwaukee Brewers reliever set a new record for the most scoreless innings by a relief pitcher in a single postseason.

Ashby pitched a perfect ninth inning in Game 4 of the World Series to break the previous mark of 16 scoreless relief innings, set by Andrew Miller for Cleveland in 2016. Ashby kept going in extra innings, working a perfect tenth and retiring the first batter in the eleventh. He left the game having tossed 18 scoreless innings across nine playoff appearances this year.

Late heartbreak for Milwaukee

Despite Ashby's dominance, Milwaukee could not close out the win. The Brewers were three outs away from securing their first championship, but their bullpen eventually stumbled.

Rookie Cooper Pratt hit a solo home run in the top of the twelfth inning to give the Brewers a 3-2 lead. However, Milwaukee used pitchers who rarely see action, and Tampa Bay capitalized. Third baseman Joey Ortiz made a throwing error on a grounder by Junior Caminero with Antonio Senzatela pitching. Rookie left hander Shane Drohan then came in and gave up three straight singles to Liam Hicks, Jonny DeLuca, and pinch hitter Ben Williamson. The Rays won 4-3 to avoid a sweep.

Dominant October turn

Ashby has been nearly unhittable this month. During the regular season, he went 13-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 71 relief appearances. In October, he has given up just five hits and three walks while striking out 20 batters.

Counting his final regular season outings, Ashby has now thrown a career high 22 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. That is a sharp turn from his previous playoff history. Across the 2021, 2024, and 2025 postseasons, Ashby had given up nine runs, eight earned, over 9 1/3 innings in 10 appearances.
