A Messy Win in Orchard Park
The Buffalo Bills are still undefeated, but their latest victory was far from pretty. Buffalo overcame five turnovers on Sunday to secure a 24-16 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, moving to 3-0 on the season.
The trouble started immediately. Running back James Cook III fumbled on the very first play from scrimmage. Quarterback Josh Allen then threw interceptions on two of the next three drives. After high-scoring first halves in their first two games, the Bills found themselves tied 10-10 at halftime.
Quarterback Josh Allen did not hide his frustration after the game. He noted that while they won, there are a lot of smoke detectors going off right now and they have to clean things up. Coach Joe Brady was even more direct, calling the performance unacceptable and saying the house was on fire.
A Surprising Halftime Message
Instead of panicking, Brady used his halftime speech to challenge his players. He told the team that the difficult situation was perfect because he wanted to see how they would respond. He wanted to see if they would point fingers or stick together.
The second half did not bring immediate relief. The Bills committed two more turnovers and were flagged for six penalties that cost them 43 yards. Allen, who finished the day 16 of 26 for 204 yards with no passing touchdowns and two rushing scores, threw for just 82 yards after halftime.
Yet, the team did not fall apart. Center Connor McGovern credited Brady for keeping everyone focused. McGovern said the coach preaches that they do not break, and that the players were ready to keep playing until the final whistle.
Defense Steps Up
In the first two weeks of the season, the Buffalo offense carried the team while the defense struggled. On Sunday, the roles reversed.
Defensive performances like the one Buffalo put together are rare. Since 2010, NFL teams that turn the ball over five or more times in a game allow an average of 32.7 points. The Bills allowed just 16 points. This marks only the fourth time in the past twenty years that a team won despite five turnovers while giving up 16 points or fewer.
The Chargers made mistakes of their own to help Buffalo. Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert threw an interception just outside the red zone early in the fourth quarter, missing a chance to take a two-score lead. The Bills capitalized on the error and held on for the win.
