The Call for Ownership Change

Manchester City must enter a new era. Following the club's guilty verdict for breaching Premier League financial rules, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has called on the owners to sell the club. Carragher believes there is no future for any executives involved in the scandal, from majority owner Sheikh Mansour downwards.

An independent commission recently ruled that Manchester City clearly intended to bypass Premier League rules. The commission found that the club inflated their revenue and hid costs through sham commercial deals over a nine-season period. City have already stated that they plan to appeal the decision.

Carragher Warns of Institutional Cheating

Writing on the situation, Carragher expressed that the club can only recover "once the custodians recognise they have failed in their duty and sell up." He stated that the scale of the institutional cheating and lack of cooperation makes the position of all involved executives untenable.

Carragher also warned that fighting the decision will only prolong the agony for the fans. He argued that anyone who breaks the owners' and directors' rules must be disqualified. Otherwise, he believes the regulations are not fit for purpose.

Political Concerns and Regulatory Powers

Not everyone agrees that the owners should leave. Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed concern about the prospect of the owners selling the club. Burnham pointed out that the ownership group has been a major partner in building modern Manchester, pumping billions of pounds into both the club and the city since 2008.

Meanwhile, David Kogan, the chair of the Independent Football Regulator, noted that the ruling raises serious issues. Kogan pointed out that the regulator has the power to assess whether owners and executives are suitable once all legal proceedings are finished.

Sponsors and Former Managers React

The fallout from the verdict is already spreading. Etihad Airways, the main sponsor for Manchester City, announced that it is currently assessing its legal options in light of the independent commission's ruling.

Despite the chaos, former manager Pep Guardiola has publicly backed the club. Guardiola, who won six Premier League titles before leaving last season, posted a message of support on social media. He told fans he is behind the club, the owners, and the players, writing, "we will get through this together."
