Clemson beat California 24-10 on Friday, using a dominant defense and 255 rushing yards to secure the road victory.
Tigers Show Muscle on the Road
Dabo Swinney wanted his team to show more fight this season. On Friday night, Clemson answered the call with a 24-10 road win over California. The Tigers controlled the line of scrimmage, picking up 255 rushing yards while keeping the Bears out of the end zone on offense.
Running back Gideon Davidson led the offense with 159 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns. His second score was a 75 yard sprint with two minutes and 58 seconds left on the clock, putting the game away. It was the second straight 100 yard game for Davidson, which helped carry an offense that had an uneven night from freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds. Reynolds completed 13 of 21 passes for 108 yards with one interception and one lost fumble.
Dominant Defensive Effort
Clemson took control of this game through its defense. The unit gave up only three points and held Cal to 231 total yards, including 145 passing yards and 86 rushing yards.
The defensive pressure rattled Cal quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who finished with the worst outing of his college career. Cal has now scored just five offensive touchdowns across three games against FBS opponents this season. First year Bears coach Tosh Lupoi admitted the team is still searching for what works best on offense, but he shared full confidence in offensive coordinator Jordan Somerville to review the tape and fix the problems.
Major Conference Test Ahead
Swinney was pleased with the physical effort from his defense. He noted that holding opponents to just three points defensively achieved what the team set out to do.
The challenge gets much tougher next week. Clemson returns home to host No. 6 Miami with both programs undefeated in conference play. Swinney called Miami one of the top teams in the country and noted that Clemson will have to play its best game of the season to win.
