Mora Makes A Move Mid-Game

Colorado State made a major change on their coaching staff right in the middle of Saturday's game. Defensive coordinator Tyson Summers was let go during a tough 56-26 loss against Oregon State. The decision came during a very rough performance on the field.

Assistant Kenny McClendon took over the defensive playcalling duties during the first half of the game. Summers had been seen on the sidelines earlier in the matchup, which was Colorado State's official debut in the Pac-12.

Head coach Jim Mora confirmed the departure after the game ended. Mora told reporters, "Tyson was relieved of his playcalling duties," and added that Summers left the field and is no longer with the football program.

Clarifying The Timing

While Mora announced the news after the final whistle, there was some confusion about the exact timing of the firing. A report indicated that Summers was not officially fired during the actual game, despite leaving the field in the first half. Fans and onlookers were surprised to see a coordinator depart before a game had even concluded.

Regardless of the exact minute of his dismissal, the decision marks a swift end to Summers' time with the team. The Rams defense struggled to stop their opponents, leading to the coaching change before halftime.

A Difficult Run For The Rams

The defensive unit has faced major difficulties lately. Colorado State has now given up at least 41 points in each of their last three games. All three of those matchups ended in losses for the Rams. The team will now have to look forward and try to rebuild their defensive strategy under new leadership.

Summers had served as the defensive coordinator for Colorado State since 2025. He also had a stint as the interim head coach for five games last year after the school fired former head coach Jay Norvell. When Mora took over the head coaching job, he chose to keep Summers on as his defensive coordinator. That relationship has now ended after a difficult stretch on the field.
