Solid start in Dallas

Connor Hellebuyck made an immediate impact in his first start for the New Jersey Devils. The three time Vezina Trophy winner stopped 16 of 17 shots on Tuesday night to secure a 5-1 victory against the Dallas Stars.

Hellebuyck took the ice just four days after being traded by the Winnipeg Jets. His trade followed a suspension for failing to report to training camp. The win was his first since April 9 at St. Louis in a 3-2 game.

Offense steps up for New Jersey

Nico Hischier led the way for New Jersey by scoring twice. The captain, in his 10th season with the Devils, scored at 2:41 of the first period after Dallas unsuccessfully challenged for goalie interference on Timo Meier. Hischier added his second goal 38 seconds into the second period. He now has a team high seven goals and two two goal games.

Jesper Boqvist made it 3-0 midway through the second period. After Justin Hryckowian scored on a deflection at 16:08 of the second to get Dallas on the board, Luke Hughes answered 28 seconds later. Jack Hughes also scored as New Jersey won its fourth straight game to open a road back to back.

Tough night for the Stars

Dallas saw its five game winning streak come to an end during the fourth game of a six game homestand. Casey DeSmith made 22 saves in his third start of the season. The five goals allowed were a season high against the Stars, who entered play leading the NHL with a 1.68 goals against average.

The Stars went 3 for 3 on the penalty kill, extending their streak to 22 consecutive kills over six games. However, Dallas defenseman Kyle Capobianco was helped off the ice five minutes into the third period with an apparent leg injury and did not return.
