Controversial Replay Decision Sparks Debate In Saints Overtime Loss To Lions
A controversial overturned defensive touchdown left the New Orleans Saints frustrated after a wild 31-30 overtime loss to the Detroit Lions.

The Play That Sparked The Debate
The New Orleans Saints and Detroit Lions were left puzzled by a major officiating decision early in their recent game. The Lions ultimately won the matchup 31-30 in overtime, but a controversial call in the second quarter completely altered the momentum.
With 9:33 remaining in the second quarter and the Lions leading 7-0, Saints defensive end Chase Young got past tackle Penei Sewell. Young sacked Lions quarterback Jared Goff around the Detroit 23 yard line. The ball came loose and bounced toward the 12 yard line.
Saints edge rusher Carl Granderson and Lions tight end Sam LaPorta both chased the loose ball. Saints defensive back Jonas Sanker scooped it up and ran it into the end zone. Referees on the field initially ruled the play a backward pass and a touchdown, which would have tied the game 7-7.
Confusion Over The Rules
The replay official reviewed the play and overturned the touchdown, calling it an incomplete forward pass instead. The decision left players on both sides confused. Goff called it a "great call" but admitted he was trying to figure it out on the fly. Young said he had "never seen anything like it."
Saints linebacker Kaden Elliss thought it was a clear turnover. "To me, it looked a whole lot like a sack/fumble," Elliss said. Saints quarterback Tyler Shough pointed out that the ball went backward, though he admitted the offense did not do enough to finish the game.
According to NFL replay official Mark Butterworth, the ruling was correct because Goff had already started his throwing motion before he was contacted. Saints coach Kellen Moore called it "a little bit of a challenging circumstance," but acknowledged the rule protects the passer once the arm starts moving. Lions coach Dan Campbell was happy to accept the outcome, admitting he initially thought his team lost the play.
