From the Diamond to Capitol Hill

Former Major League Baseball star Mark Teixeira is heading to Washington. The Republican won his election to the U.S. House in Texas's 21st Congressional District.

He defeated Democrat Kristin Hook to win the seat. Hook previously worked as a federal scientist for the National Institutes of Health and the Government Accountability Office.

Teixeira ran for the seat previously held by Republican Representative Chip Roy, who decided not to seek reelection. Teixeira had already secured the Republican primary in March with over 61 percent of the vote.

A Decorated Career in Baseball

Before entering politics, Teixeira completed a 14 season career in professional baseball. He was selected fifth overall in the 2001 draft by the Texas Rangers.

He played as a slugger for both the Rangers and the New York Yankees. His career achievements include three All Star Game appearances, five Gold Gloves, three Silver Sluggers, and a World Series title with the Yankees in 2009.

Teixeira and his family moved back to Texas in 2021 after he retired from sports. His district covers a deeply conservative area located west of San Antonio and Austin.

Campaign Goals and Other Sports Figures

When Teixeira announced his campaign, he pledged to work with Donald Trump to secure the border and end what he described as radical woke indoctrination. He launched his bid shortly after state lawmakers approved a new redistricting map.

After the election, Teixeira posted a statement on X. "Together, we can build a better future for our families, our neighbors, and every community across Texas 21," Teixeira said. "I'm excited to get to work. I will be praying for all of you and for the future of this great nation. God bless Texas, and God bless America."

Teixeira was not the only sports personality in a high profile race on Tuesday. Former sideline reporter Michele Tafoya, a Republican, lost her U.S. Senate race in Minnesota to Democrat Peggy Flanagan. Tafoya, who hosted a political podcast before running, focused her campaign on opposing transgender women playing in women's sports.
