Three major calls go against Coventry

Coventry City manager Frank Lampard was left frustrated after three big decisions went against his team in a 3-1 defeat to Everton on Friday night.

The former Everton manager believed his side should have been awarded two penalties during the game. He also claimed that Everton second goal should have been ruled out for handball.

Yann Gboho scored his first goal for Coventry during the match. However, two goals from Thierno Barry and a late strike from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall nine minutes from time secured the win for Everton.

Penalty claims and handball controversy

The first incident occurred in the first half when James Tarkowski appeared to pull the hair of Caleb Yirenkyi while challenging for a cross. No penalty was awarded. Lampard said he was told it was a hair pull but not enough of one to warrant a foul. He felt that any hair pull should be ruled a foul.

The second penalty shout involved Vitaliy Mykolenko tackle on Taiwo Awoniyi. VAR decided the tackle was marginally outside the penalty box. Lampard argued that Mykolenko knee struck Awoniyi on the line of the box, which he believed was a penalty.

Lampard was also unhappy with the second goal from Thierno Barry. He stated that Barry flicked the ball in with his hand on the final touch. VAR reviewed the moment for handball but allowed the goal to stand.

Managers reflect on the result

Lampard spoke with fourth official Sam Barrott at the start of the second half to get an explanation. He said he did not get any details on the touchline. Lampard admitted Everton played well and won the match, but he pointed out that having one or two major decisions go Coventry way could have changed the outcome.

Everton manager David Moyes disagreed with all of Lampard views on the refereeing decisions. Moyes praised striker Barry, who brought his goal tally to 10 for the season. Moyes joked that Erling Haaland might be worried about Barry catching him, adding that Everton took a gamble by moving early for the forward.
