Humor in the Milwaukee dugout

Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy is well known for keeping things light while keeping his players on their toes. Left handed pitcher Colton Gordon experienced this firsthand before the playoffs. Murphy told Gordon that scouts were spying from the upper deck. Gordon rode an elevator with security to Section 422, only to discover a statue of legendary broadcaster Bob Uecker sitting in the stands.

That playful side endears the 67 year old skipper to his clubhouse. Right around the start of the postseason, Murphy delivered another classic line. He told his squad that if they are tired, they should take a nap, and if they are weak, they should get stronger. Outfielder Christian Yelich mentioned that Murphy means exactly what he says.

Accountability and high expectations

Murphy does not wait until the end of a game to address mistakes. Pitcher Chad Patrick recalled giving up runs during an inning against the Chicago Cubs. When he returned to the bench, Murphy loudly asked who was warming up, stating that Patrick had just blown the game.

However, Murphy balances that discipline with support. When 21 year old rookie Luis Lara was preparing for an at bat against Chicago, Murphy put his arms around him and gave him a positive talk. Seconds later, Lara delivered a winning walk off hit. General manager Matt Arnold emphasized that the manager simply sets very high standards for anyone in the dugout.

First baseman Jake Bauers explained that Murphy acts from a genuine place. Some players who could not handle his direct style were eventually moved, leaving behind a group built for deep playoff runs.
