Chargers Rookie Edge Rusher Akheem Mesidor Is Making His Mark
Los Angeles Chargers rookie Akheem Mesidor is making a strong early impression with his fast play and work ethic.

A unique path for the Chargers rookie
Akheem Mesidor is far from a typical rookie for the Los Angeles Chargers. The first round pick in the 2026 draft is 25 years old. That makes him older than fellow linebacker Tuli Tuipulotu and a year younger than linebacker Daiyan Henley, both drafted in 2023.
Safety Derwin James Jr. admitted the age difference is a bit weird, but he noted there is no age limit on playing well. James called the rookie a beast and predicted he will become one of the top edges in the league. He credited Mesidor as a big reason why the defense is performing at a high level.
The rookie grew up in Ottawa, Canada, and earned a reputation for having a high motor and a violent play style on the field.
Solid numbers through seven weeks
The stats back up the early praise. Through seven weeks, Mesidor has recorded 24 tackles, which ties him for fifth most on the team. He also has 2.5 sacks, ranking second on the squad, along with five quarterback hits in 191 snaps.
His standout performance came in Week 5 against the Denver Broncos. Mesidor led the Chargers with eight tackles and sacked quarterback Bo Nix, forcing a fumble that Denver recovered. Later in the third quarter, Mesidor brought down Nix again on a tackle during a play where Tuipulotu forced and recovered another fumble.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh said Mesidor is providing consistently good and high level football. Defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary added that Mesidor is playing fast and violent after feeling things out early in the season.
Learning from seasoned veterans
Mesidor joined a talented linebacker group that includes veteran leader Khalil Mack, Henley, and Bud Dupree. Last season, Tuipulotu led the Chargers with 13 sacks, while Henley led the team with 103 tackles.
Despite the depth in the room, O'Leary named Mesidor as the standard for effort on the team. James added that the rookie is consistently one of the first players to arrive at practice and among the last to leave.
Mesidor frequently seeks advice from Mack, Tuipulotu, and Dupree during meetings. Mack praised the young player for his speed, explosiveness, and backside effort when chasing down plays. Tuipulotu noted that Mesidor acts like a true professional and has adjusted quickly to rushing the passer at the professional level.
