Indiana running back Turbo Richard appears to have avoided a major injury during Friday's game against Northwestern. There is optimism that the runner will be back on the field soon, possibly even for Indiana's upcoming matchup against Rutgers.
Richard left the game in the first half after hurting his right foot and ankle. The injury happened early in the second quarter on a two-yard run near the Indiana sideline. He limped off to the locker room and did not return, but Saturday's evaluation brought positive news for the Hoosiers.
Controversy on the Sideline
Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti discussed the play that knocked his running back out of the game. Cignetti said the injury occurred on a hip-drop tackle. He also noted that Richard was hit out of bounds by Northwestern defender Brendan Flakes.
No penalty was called on the play. Despite losing their runner, the Hoosiers managed to hold on for a 29-23 victory over Northwestern. Richard had already racked up 68 rushing yards on just nine carries before he was forced to leave the game.
Stepping Up in the Backfield
With Richard sidelined, Lee Beebe Jr. took over as the primary running back for Indiana. Beebe turned in a great performance, finishing the game with 203 rushing yards and a touchdown to help secure the win.
Richard has been a major piece of the Indiana offense this season. Before Friday's game, he had rushed for 315 yards and scored four touchdowns over the team's first three matchups.
Running Back Depth Tested
The Indiana backfield is already dealing with other injuries. Running back Khobie Martin has been out since the season opener against North Texas, where he suffered a forearm injury. Martin was a key contributor and is expected to return to action sometime around midseason.
Having Richard back soon will be a boost for Indiana as they prepare for their next game. If he cannot go, Beebe has proven he is ready to handle the workload.
