Milwaukee Secures Historical Title
The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field. The victory brings the franchise its first World Series championship in its 57 year history. Thousands of fans made the 1,300 mile trip from Milwaukee to St. Petersburg to watch the final game.
Milwaukee finished the regular season with 103 wins, the most in Major League Baseball for the second year in a row. Despite carrying the 19th highest payroll and ranking 28th in home runs, the team went 11-2 during the postseason. They defeated the San Diego Padres, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Rays to secure the trophy, reaching the World Series for the first time since 1982.
Pitching and Defense Lead the Way
Jacob Misiorowski set the tone on the mound. He pitched five scoreless innings with two strikeouts and four baserunners allowed before leaving in the sixth inning with a cramp in his right calf.
Rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt brought in the first run with a single off Rays starter Drew Rasmussen in the second inning. Rasmussen was starting on three days of rest. Pratt singled again in the fifth, marking six straight hits across six at-bats, and later scored on a David Hamilton single. William Contreras added a double off the Rays bullpen in the sixth, followed by a sac fly from Pratt.
The bullpen closed out the win. JoJo Romero, Abner Uribe, and Trevor Megill allowed just one run over the last 3 1/3 innings. Milwaukee relievers posted a 1.34 ERA throughout October. Other key starters like Robert Gasser contributed during the run, posting a 0.60 ERA in three postseason starts. Manager Pat Murphy and front office leader Matt Arnold built a roster that finally reached the top after seven playoff appearances in eight years.
