Mumps Outbreak and Injuries Batter San Diego State Football
San Diego State is dealing with a major mumps outbreak and a long injury list ahead of their game against Texas State.

Aztecs Hit by Mumps Outbreak
San Diego State is facing a major health challenge as they prepare for Saturday's game against Texas State. The university confirmed that 14 cases of mumps have been found within a single athletic team. While the school did not name the team, reports have identified it as the football program.
The outbreak has spread since September 18, when the school first confirmed three cases and two probable cases. Dr. T. Ghosh, the medical director of student health services, noted that symptoms can take 12 to 25 days to develop. This means the new cases show the virus has spread within the team.
Roster Strained by Illness and Injuries
The illness comes at a bad time for the Aztecs. On Wednesday, the team's availability report listed nearly three dozen players. Seventeen of those players are doubtful or out.
Nine players are already ruled out for Saturday's game. This list includes running back Lucky Sutton, who has a high ankle sprain, and guard Michael Leville Watkins. Backup running back Javion Kinnard is doubtful with a knee injury suffered during last week's 41-16 loss to Toledo.
Head coach Sean Lewis is trying to keep his team focused despite the adversity. "The football gods have not really favored us with the injury luck," Lewis said. He added that other players must step up, saying, "We've been given a nice storm here. But this too shall pass, and we've got to be able to see our way through it."
