Keeping the Core Together
The New York Knicks finally broke their 53 year title drought last season. Now, they are trying to do something no NBA team has done in eight seasons. They want to repeat as champions.
The good news is that New York kept all five of its starting players. But keeping the roster together required some tough financial choices. Team owner James Dolan decided to avoid the league's punitive second apron.
Because of this, the Knicks could not match the Boston Celtics' offer to backup center Mitchell Robinson, who left for a deal worth over 15 million dollars per season. To fill the gap, the Knicks signed veteran Andre Drummond. They also kept key bench pieces Jordan Clarkson, Jose Alvarado, Landry Shamet, and Mohamed Diawara. Both Alvarado and Shamet took below market deals to stay in New York.
The Drummond Downgrade and Health Risks
While the starting lineup remains strong, the bench took a hit. Analysts gave the Knicks' offseason a B minus grade. Replacing Robinson with Drummond is seen as a downgrade that could hurt the team during the playoffs.
Health is another major factor. Last season, the Knicks were incredibly healthy. All five starters played at least 66 regular season games and started 98 percent of the playoff games.
Karl Anthony Towns played 75 games, his highest total since the 2018 2019 season. If Towns misses time this year, the lack of depth at center could expose the Knicks, especially with Robinson gone.
Tactical Questions and the Road Ahead
Under coach Mike Brown, the Knicks had a highly efficient offense. They ranked third in offensive rating during the regular season and jumped to first in the playoffs. Brown achieved this by running more of the offense through Towns as a distributor.
Defensively, New York held opponents to a league low 31 percent on three pointers during their championship run. However, some metrics suggest that number was luckily low, and the team could face regression.
A team source has warned about a potential championship hangover. Still, with nine of their top ten playoff rotation players returning, the Knicks are ranked third in the Basketball Power Index and look ready to defend their crown.
