North Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Belichick has resigned. His decision comes as the university finished an independent investigation into the football program's culture and climate.

The probe found what the school called isolated disregard for values and standards of conduct. In a statement released on Thursday, the university said these actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure.

The school added that all necessary corrective actions are now underway. These will be overseen by Carolina Athletics and the Office of University Counsel. With these steps, the university now considers the investigation resolved.

Belichick's Departure and Staff Changes

Belichick is 39 years old and is the son of North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick. He served as the defensive coordinator under his father last season. Before that, he also worked with his father on the coaching staff of the New England Patriots.

Belichick will officially leave the football program on Oct. 27. This departure will happen after his current medical leave concludes.

His exit is not the only major change for the program recently. In July, general manager Michael Lombardi was placed on administrative leave while the school investigated his conduct. Lombardi later resigned from his position on Sept. 3.

Player Suspension

The university also announced that freshman wide receiver Keeyun Chapman has been suspended indefinitely. Chapman was arrested on Tuesday night during a traffic stop. Police charged him with carrying a concealed handgun.

The university released a statement on the matter. It said that Chapman's suspension, like the actions resulting from the investigation, reflect the university's commitment to accountability and the well-being of its student athletes.
