It was a wild turnaround for Oklahoma State. The team went 1-11 last season and started this year with a disappointing 24-10 loss to Tulsa. This victory also kept an impressive streak alive, marking the program's 31st consecutive win in home openers. The game started after a 90-minute weather delay.
Mestemaker Leads the Charge
Quarterback Drew Mestemaker was the star of the day. He threw for 317 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 109 yards and another score. Mestemaker, who played for Morris at North Texas last season, is one of 88 new players on the Oklahoma State roster. He bounced back in a big way after a poor performance in the season opener.
The Cowboys dominated the stat sheet, outgaining the Ducks 554 yards to 281. Oklahoma State held a 24-17 lead at halftime. Mestemaker set the tone early with a 75-yard run on the very first play of the game.
Fighting Off a Ducks Comeback
Oregon stayed in the game thanks to big defensive plays. Linebacker Devon Jackson intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 96 yards for a touchdown in the first half. Later, Matayo Uliagalelei intercepted Mestemaker, setting up a short touchdown run by Jordan Davison.
Oregon took a 31-30 lead in the fourth quarter when Dante Moore threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Evan Stewart. However, Mestemaker responded by driving the Cowboys 75 yards. He leaped over defenders at the goal line for a 10-yard touchdown run to regain the lead. A two-point conversion failed, but Oklahoma State's defense forced a turnover on downs. Kicker Sam Keltner later added his fourth field goal of the day to seal the victory.
