Golden State Facing Frontcourt Troubles as Porzingis Stays Away
The Warriors face serious center depth issues while Kristaps Porzingis remains absent from the team.

Center troubles mount in Golden State
Draymond Green started at center on opening night for the Golden State Warriors in his 15th NBA season. The 36 year old veteran was put in a tough spot early as the team tries to manage his workload.
With Al Horford limited in his 20th season, Golden State had to start Graham Ike against the Memphis Grizzlies. Ike, an undrafted two way center out of Gonzaga, was playing in just his second career game. In the fourth quarter of that game, Green tried to box out 7-4 Zach Edey. Green committed a frustration foul after missing the rebound, and Golden State blew a 12 point lead.
Green spoke about the position after the game. "We got what we got," Green said. "So we gotta make it do what it do."
Porzingis remains away from team
The center issues come as Kristaps Porzingis stays away from the roster. Porzingis signed a two year, $40 million extension in June, but stepped away right before training camp for a private health matter.
His status was later changed to "not with team" after he did not stay at the facility. Head coach Steve Kerr has been instructed to prepare as if Porzingis is not available. General manager Mike Dunleavy and lead medical officer Rick Celebrini are the only staff members in contact with him.
Stephen Curry expressed sympathy for Porzingis, who has dealt with lingering effects from a viral illness caught two seasons ago in Boston. Curry noted that availability is huge for the roster, calling the situation hard to figure out.
Front office weighs future steps
Golden State has started the season 1-3. Team sources feel pessimism about Porzingis returning to play for the franchise again.
The front office may look at trading him or even voiding his contract if his absence is ruled a failure to render services. His contract carries only $3 million guaranteed next year, which could make him a flexible trade target for other teams looking for salary options.
