Tebas steps in after Mbappé controversy

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has met with China's Ambassador to Spain, Yao Jing, to find solutions following comments made by Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé. The French star caused significant controversy in China after commenting on a meme that compared him to Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China.

Tebas wrote on X that he held the meeting to discuss the situation and seek solutions to move past the incident. He pointed out that Spanish football has worked closely with Chinese authorities, organisations, businesses, and broadcasters over recent years to grow the game. LaLiga currently maintains a strategic agreement with the Chinese Professional Football League through 2029, as well as agreements with China Media Group to reach millions of fans.

Broadcasts cut and sponsors drop out

The reaction in China to Mbappé's comment was immediate. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV suspended evening broadcasts of LaLiga matches and stopped showing any games that feature Mbappé.

The controversy has also impacted the player financially. At least three separate companies have cut ties with Mbappé since the incident took place.

Apologies issued by Mbappé and Real Madrid

Mbappé attempted to clear the air on Tuesday by issuing a public apology to the Chinese people on social media. In his post, the striker stated that his comment regarding Mao Zedong was ill judged.

Real Madrid, who own a percentage of Mbappé's image rights, released an official statement on Wednesday to express their own apologies. The club stated that it holds deep respect for China, its history, culture, and citizens, as well as the millions of Chinese fans who support the team. Tebas noted that he hopes this single incident does not harm a relationship built on mutual respect and cooperation.
