Purdue fell to 0-12 in games played within seven days of a Taylor Swift album release after losing 49-10 to Notre Dame.
The Streak Continues Against Notre Dame
Purdue suffered a 49-10 defeat against Notre Dame on Saturday. While fans can look at what went wrong on the field, history suggests the result was already set. The loss extended an unusual losing streak connected directly to pop superstar Taylor Swift.
Whenever Swift releases or rereleases an album, Purdue simply cannot find a way to win. The Boilermakers have now played 12 games within seven days of a Swift album release, and they have lost all 12. Swift released her latest project, "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore," on Friday, right before Purdue took the field.
Nearly Two Decades of Trouble
The pattern started on Oct. 24, 2006, when Swift put out her self titled debut album. Two days later, Purdue lost 12-0 to Penn State.
The defeats kept coming with every major release over the following decade. After "Fearless" came out on Nov. 11, 2008, Purdue lost 22-17 at Iowa four days later. The pattern repeated with "Speak Now" in 2010 during a 44-10 loss at Illinois, "Red" in 2012 with a 44-28 loss at Minnesota, and "1989" in 2014 with a 35-14 loss at Nebraska. It happened again after "Reputation" in 2017 with a 23-13 loss at Northwestern, and after "Lover" in 2019 with a loss at Nevada seven days later.
Recent Rereleases Keep the Hex Alive
The trend was highlighted on the college football podcast "The Solid Verbal" in 2025. Purdue did manage victories when games fell outside the seven day window, including a 24-20 win over Iowa in 2020 after "Folklore," a win against Oregon State in 2021, and a 49-0 win over Indiana State in 2024.
Inside that one week window, the struggles returned every time. Following the release of "Red (Taylor's Version)" on Nov. 12, 2021, Purdue suffered a 59-31 loss at Ohio State the next day. A day after "Midnights" arrived in 2022, the team lost 35-24 at Wisconsin. A 31-13 loss at Nebraska followed "1989 (Taylor's Version)" in 2023, and last fall brought a 43-27 loss to Illinois right after "The Life of a Showgirl" launched.
