Rams Lose Myles Garrett to Surgery After Week 1 Injury Setback
Rams defensive end Myles Garrett is heading to injured reserve for knee surgery, leaving Los Angeles without a key defender for at least four games.

Garrett Sidelined for Surgery
Los Angeles Rams defensive end Myles Garrett is set to undergo knee surgery after a difficult Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Head coach Sean McVay announced that the team does not have a timeline for Garrett's return until after the procedure. Garrett will miss at least the next four games on injured reserve.
Garrett missed most of training camp with swelling in his knee. The Rams hoped he could play through the issue, but his performance in the season opener proved otherwise. The star defender finished the game without a single tackle. This was only the fourth time in his career, and his first since Week 11 of the 2024 season, that he failed to record a tackle.
A Tough Lesson for Los Angeles
Coach McVay admitted the team made a mistake in trying to play Garrett. "Thought we would take an approach where he'd be feeling good enough to go contribute positive change and be the player that he's capable of," McVay said. "That wasn't the case. And so the next right thing for us is to be able to get this thing fixed."
The game took place in Melbourne, Australia. Initially, McVay believed Garrett was fully healthy. However, talks after the game made it clear that the knee was still a major issue. Garrett himself acknowledged his struggles, saying he was too focused on his knee during the game. "When I was out there, I was a little bit more focused on myself and trying to stay healthy than what they were doing, and that showed," Garrett said. "I wasn't who I needed to be for my team."
In other injury news, the Rams have not decided if defensive tackle Aaron Donald will play in Week 2. The Rams face the New York Giants on Monday Night Football, and Donald's status remains undecided.
