Ryan Helsley Intends to Pick Up 14 Million Dollar Option with Orioles
Reliever Ryan Helsley plans to exercise his 14 million dollar option to stay with the Baltimore Orioles for the 2027 season.

Option Decision for 2027
Reliever Ryan Helsley intends to pick up his 14 million dollar player option to remain with the Baltimore Orioles for the 2027 season.
Helsley signed his contract with Baltimore during the previous offseason. That deal paid the right handed pitcher 14 million dollars for the 2026 season and included a player option for 2027. By deciding to pick up the option now, Helsley secures his place on the Baltimore roster for another year.
Injury Struggles in 2026
The first year of the contract did not go as smoothly as either side had hoped, largely due to physical setbacks. Helsley was limited to just 17 appearances on the mound during the year because of ongoing elbow problems.
His overall statistics reflected those health struggles throughout his limited time on the field. Helsley ended the season with an 0-4 record and a 4.11 ERA for Baltimore. He also managed to record eight saves during those 17 appearances.
Recent Career Path
Baltimore originally signed Helsley last offseason to take over primary closing duties for the team. At the time of the signing, regular reliever Félix Bautista was sidelined while dealing with shoulder issues.
Helsley brought impressive credentials from his previous stops around the league. He set a career high in 2024 when he recorded 49 saves for the St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis later traded Helsley to the New York Mets in the middle of the 2025 season. After finishing that year with the Mets, he agreed to join Baltimore.
Bullpen Setup Moving Forward
Bautista eventually completed his long recovery process and returned to the Orioles bullpen in September.
With Helsley intending to stay in Baltimore for 2027, the team could potentially feature both relievers in their bullpen. Having two experienced options late in games would give the pitching staff added depth. However, health remains a potential concern for the Orioles moving forward. Both relievers have dealt with significant medical issues recently, with Bautista recovering from shoulder trouble and Helsley managing elbow problems this past year.
