Guerrero Expresses Regret
Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has issued an apology. He expressed regret on Friday for comments he made about his contract, which is worth 500 million dollars over 14 years.
In a recent interview with a Dominican television program, Guerrero suggested he was being paid for his past achievements rather than his future performance. The comments sparked heavy criticism, leading the star player to address the situation.
"The main reason I'm here is because I regret my comments the other day," Guerrero said through a translator. He added that his teammates and fans deserved an apology.
The Controversial Interview
The controversy began when a clip of the interview became public. Guerrero had noted that the team did not pay him to hit 40 home runs every year. Instead, he claimed they paid him for what he had already accomplished.
He even admitted to doubting himself at times. Guerrero recalled thinking to himself that he was doing nothing on the field despite receiving a historic amount of money.
Initially, Guerrero stood by his comments after a loss to Baltimore on Wednesday, which officially eliminated the Blue Jays from postseason contention. However, after talking to his father, Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, and his teammates, he decided to apologize.
A Disappointing Season
The contract is the third largest in baseball history, trailing only Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani. It includes a record 325 million dollar signing bonus. But this season has not gone to plan for the six time All Star.
Guerrero has dealt with a back injury, a concussion, and a tight right hamstring. These physical setbacks have contributed to a major slump. He is batting .263 with just nine home runs and 56 RBIs this year. Both the home run and RBI totals are career lows for a full season.
"It's been a disappointing year for me," Guerrero admitted. "I couldn't help my team more to accomplish our goal, which is hard for me." He promised to keep working hard to make his contract look like a great deal for the franchise.
