Keenum Shines in Surprise Start

Case Keenum did not look like a 38 year old quarterback who had not started a regular season game in 1,009 days. Stepping in for the injured Caleb Williams, Keenum led the Chicago Bears to a dominant 27-7 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night. He completed 24 of 34 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns, while also scoring on a quarterback sneak.

Williams is expected to miss three to four weeks with a Grade 2 hamstring strain. Keenum's stellar play gives the Bears a great option while their rookie starter heals. He was perfect against the blitz, completing all 11 of his passes for 145 yards and two scores. Coach Ben Johnson called Keenum extraordinary, praising his quick decision making. Keenum got the ball out in an average of 2.41 seconds, which is the fastest release time by a Bears quarterback since last season.

A Tough Decision for Coach Johnson

Despite Keenum's success, his spot as the starter is not guaranteed. Tyson Bagent, the team's official number two quarterback, spent most of last week in concussion protocol. He was cleared to play on Sunday but only practiced once. Johnson decided it was not fair to start Bagent without getting a full week of practice reps, so he kept him on the sideline.

Bagent signed a two year, 10 million dollar contract to be the primary backup. Johnson noted after the game that there was a reason Bagent finished training camp in that role. With Bagent now healthy, the coaching staff must decide who will start this week.

Keenum is no stranger to this uncertainty. During his famous 2017 run with the Minnesota Vikings, he constantly faced the threat of returning to the bench despite winning games. Keenum said the chance to start again meant a lot to him, helping him find his love for the game again after bouncing around the league.
