Barcelona will return to the Olympic Stadium next season after approving 510 million euros in extra funding to finish the Camp Nou.
Another temporary move for Barca
Barcelona will play at the Olympic Stadium again next season. The club needs to move out of the Spotify Camp Nou so workers can install the new stadium roof.
Club treasurer Ferran Olive confirmed the plan at the annual general meeting. Barcelona will finish this current season at their regular home. They will then start the 2027/28 season at the Olympic Stadium, before returning to the Camp Nou in January 2028.
This is not the first time the Spanish champions have had to play there. They previously spent two years at the Olympic Stadium before returning to the Camp Nou last November.
Rising costs and severe delays
The stadium redevelopment began in 2023 but has faced major delays. Because of these setbacks, club members had to approve a new financing package of 510 million euros.
This extra funding brings the total cost of the project to nearly 2 billion euros. The club stated that 300 million euros of the new money will go toward finishing the stadium. This part of the project has grown to include new facilities, services, and technology.
The remaining 210 million euros will be raised through two separate media notes. These are backed by future television revenue from La Liga and UEFA matches.
Capacity growth and future revenue
Right now, the Camp Nou can only hold 62,000 fans because only two tiers are open. The club expects this to grow to 75,000 before this season ends.
When the team returns in January 2028, the capacity will be 95,000. It will finally reach 105,000 for the 2028/29 season when the work is done.
Barcelona needs the project finished to boost its income. The club expects more money from ticket sales, VIP hospitality, and the club museum. There is also pressure from UEFA, which recently announced that the Camp Nou will host the Champions League final in 2029.
