A Major Long Term Commitment

The Washington Capitals have made a major commitment to forward Justin Sourdif. On Tuesday, the team signed the 24 year old to an eight year contract extension. The deal is worth 6.35 million dollars annually and will begin next season.

Sourdif, a native of Richmond, British Columbia, was heading into the final season of a two year contract. That previous deal was worth 825,000 dollars annually. He was set to become a restricted free agent before agreeing to this long term extension to stay in Washington.

Breakthrough Season Leads to Big Payday

Sourdif earned his new contract after a breakthrough performance in the 2025 to 2026 season. It was his first full year in the NHL. He scored 15 goals and recorded 35 points in 78 games. Before that campaign, he had scored just one point in four NHL games.

He was one of 11 players on the Capitals roster to score more than 10 goals last year. Despite those contributions, Washington finished just four points out of the final Eastern Conference wild card spot.

Locking Up the Capitals Core

The Capitals are clearly focused on keeping their young talent together. Sourdif is now one of 12 Washington players signed for at least three more years.

He was not the only player to sign a massive extension on Tuesday. Forward Ryan Leonard also agreed to an eight year deal. Leonard's contract is worth 10.5 million dollars annually. Like Sourdif's deal, Leonard's contract will also begin at the start of the 2026 to 2027 season.
