Trade Talks Heat Up
The Pittsburgh Steelers are receiving trade inquiries for cornerback Joey Porter Jr. A handful of teams have contacted the organization to ask about his availability. The Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions are among the teams showing interest in the star.
The Steelers are willing to listen to trade offers for Porter, according to league sources. However, they also would want a strong compensation package if they were to deal him. Porter has been seeking a new contract, but the Steelers do not negotiate deals during the season. This has raised questions about the possibility of a trade.
Cowboys Need Cornerback Help
Dallas has aggressively rebuilt its defense over the past 13 months. The front office brought in Quinnen Williams, Rashan Gary, and Kenny Clark through trades. They also used first round draft picks on Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence.
Despite these moves, the Cowboys remain thin at cornerback. Starting cornerback Cobie Durant is sidelined with a hamstring injury and will miss the Week 3 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. Adding Porter would give their secondary a major boost.
Lions Secondary Struggles
The Detroit Lions are another team that could use immediate help in their secondary. Detroit has struggled against the pass, giving up the second most passing yards in the NFL over the first two weeks of the season.
Injuries have hit the Lions hard. Safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph are currently on the PUP list. Cornerback Avonte Maddox is also out for the remainder of the season with a foot injury.
Porter's Current Status
Porter has not played yet this season. He is currently going through a prolonged ramp up process as he recovers from a back injury. He was limited in practice this week and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Porter said he "definitely" would play for the Steelers in 2026, even without a contract extension. However, he remained noncommittal about whether he will suit up against the Bengals this weekend.
