Frightening Collision Against Tennessee
Georgia Tech suffered a major scare on Saturday during their game against Tennessee. Cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe had to be taken off the field on a stretcher following a collision with one of his own teammates.
The play happened during the third quarter of the game. Mbakwe went to make a tackle on the play, but he unfortunately collided with teammate Jordan Walker. Mbakwe's head struck Walker's knee, which left both of the defenders injured on the field.
Medical Staff Tends to the Players
The impact of the collision was immediately felt by both players. Walker was unable to leave the field on his own power. He was eventually carried off the field by the Georgia Tech trainers.
Mbakwe's situation appeared more serious. He remained down on the turf for several minutes as medical staff rushed to his side to evaluate him. The game was paused while the medical team worked to secure him on a stretcher.
Emotional Scene on the Field
The injury led to an emotional scene on the turf. While Mbakwe was being placed on the stretcher, his teammates gathered around him. Many of them kneeled in prayer for the injured cornerback.
Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key also went onto the field to check on his player. Key was able to hold Mbakwe's hand while the medical crew prepared to move him. As the cart finally began to move him off the field, Mbakwe lifted one of his arms in the air, offering a positive sign to those watching.
Taken to the Hospital
Mbakwe was immediately taken for further medical attention after leaving the stadium. Reporter Stormy Buonantony reported that the cornerback was being transported to the hospital.
He will undergo further testing at the hospital to evaluate his condition following the collision.
