Leadership responds to growing fan frustration

Florida State president Richard McCullough reached out to the university community on Tuesday. He explained that he understands the deep frustration supporters feel right now about the direction of the athletics organization and the football program.

The university has been looking closely at every single part of its athletics setup. This review started after the school fired athletic director Michael Alford last month. McCullough said officials are methodically working on a plan to position the school for long term success. Part of that work includes setting clear expectations, roles, and duties for the next athletic director. That setup phase is almost finished, and the search for the new AD will begin soon.

Questions surround the football program

Fan anger has grown recently over what many view as administrative inaction regarding the football team. McCullough did not mention head football coach Mike Norvell by name in his letter, but questions about job security have lingered for the past 18 months.

Since winning the ACC title back in 2023, Norvell has put together a 10-21 record. At the end of last season, McCullough announced that Norvell would return for 2026. That decision came alongside a restructured personnel department and added resources, all aimed at creating a turnaround on the field. Heading into Saturday against Clemson, Florida State sits at 3-4 on the season.

High standards and a call for support

McCullough noted that this is a consequential moment for the university. In his letter, he stated that Florida State should compete for championships, develop exceptional student athletes, and attract outstanding coaches. He added that the standard is not negotiable.

The president acknowledged the poor results directly. He wrote that leadership is not asking fans to ignore what has happened or to believe that everything is fine, because they know it is not. He emphasized that the school is committed to changing those results and building lasting success, while asking supporters to remain behind the current players.
