Sanders Denies Paying Off Critics

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders set the record straight on Tuesday regarding rumors that he offered critics money to stop talking about him. Sanders explained that a story about him offering $50,000 to silence people was simply a joke.

The story surfaced after Christopher Neely, a YouTube content creator known as Uncle Neely who has been around Sanders since his time at Jackson State, made comments on an internet roundtable. Neely claimed Sanders offered critics $50,000 to not mention his name for a year.

A Joke About People Making Money Off His Name

During his weekly news conference on Tuesday, Sanders was confused when asked about offering money to silence criticism. Neely, who was in the room, gave the coach a quick background.

Sanders then clarified his statements. He told reporters that it was really a joke about people prospering off his name and brand. Sanders added that he would never offer a man money and does not care what people say about him.

He pointed out that he has dealt with criticism his whole life as a player and coach. Reflecting on his Hall of Fame NFL playing career, Sanders said he danced and high stepped, but he never belittled opponents or talked trash on the field.

Tough Times On The Field

The Buffaloes are currently experiencing a tough stretch, dropping five games in a row heading into their Saturday matchup against Kansas State. Sanders is in his fourth year at Colorado with an 18-26 overall record.

Sanders helped bring attention back to the program with his quarterback son Shedeur and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter during a 9-4 season that ended with a bowl game. However, a 3-9 finish last year set up expectations for improvement that have not been met during a 2-5 start this season.
