Montez Sweat speaks on accidental positive test
Chicago Bears defensive end Montez Sweat is back with his team after completing a two game suspension for violating the league performance enhancing substances policy. Sweat called the situation accidental and surprising, adding that he must take it on the chin and move forward.
The 30 year old missed victories over the Falcons and Patriots before his reinstatement on Oct. 23. He returns to action in Week 8 when Chicago visits the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football.
Sweat admitted it was devastating to leave his teammates and acknowledged the lasting mark on his reputation. He took full responsibility and chose not to appeal the decision. He also stated that the Bears training and nutritional staff were not at fault.
Financial loss and impact on the field
The suspension carries a heavy financial penalty for the defensive end. Sweat forfeited 2.3 million dollars of his 2026 base salary. His remaining 12.7 million dollars owed for this season and 21 million dollars in guarantees for 2027 were also voided.
Sweat is in his eighth season in the league and signed a four year, 98 million dollar contract after joining Chicago in 2023. He recorded 12.5 sacks that year and added 10 sacks in 2025. Coach Ben Johnson praised his work in 2025 as his best professional season.
So far this season, Sweat has two sacks, seven tackles, and two tackles for loss. Facing his head coach after learning about the suspension was hard, but Sweat said looking people in the eye is necessary to move forward.
