New Visual Identity Revealed

The Houston Comets revealed their new logos on Thursday night following a week of teasers on social media. The team shared the designs as part of the franchise rebirth in Houston after the league awarded the relocation of the Connecticut Sun.

Eight trademark applications appeared on the United States Patent and Trademark Office website on Wednesday. WNBA Enterprises LLC submitted the filings. They included two applications for each of the four logos, covering entertainment services as well as sports jerseys and clothing.

Breakdown of the Design Options

The designs were revealed in red and blue. The primary logo features a stylized letter H with a basketball and comet tail cutting through it. Another version places that icon inside a circular emblem with Houston Comets written along the border.

Two secondary logos focus on text. One displays the word Houston with four stars scattered among the letters, with a basketball and comet tail passing through the T and O. The other shows Comets in the same style, with the basketball going through the C and O.

Trademark Strategy and Early Leaks

The filings were first noticed by trademark attorney Josh Gerben. He explained that sports leagues can register applications in foreign countries like Mauritius or Jamaica to prevent leaks before making big announcements.

There was a way for the WNBA to have filed these trademarks where everybody would not have been able to find them before the announcement, Gerben said. They could have literally filed them offshore. Doing so gives teams a six month window to file in the United States while keeping the original filing date, though it is unclear if the league took that step.

Clearing Name Rights

The franchise name had faced potential trademark conflicts in recent months. In 2024, a Delaware corporation named TSTM Holdings LLC applied to trademark the name Houston Comets for clothing, gym bags, and other goods.

The owners of TSTM Holdings remain unknown. However, official records show the company abandoned its trademark application on Thursday morning, clearing the path for the team.
