A 31,000 mile trek ends in Hull

Karl Bushby is finishing a 31,000 mile walk from South America back to his hometown of Hull on Monday. The 57 year old former paratrooper started his trip in Punta Aires, Chile, back in 1998 when he was 29 years old.

He set two strict rules for himself when he left. He could not return to the UK until the walk was complete, and he could not use any transport to move forward. After 28 years on the road, he is set to arrive at Queen Victoria Square around 11 o'clock on Monday morning. His mother Angela, his son, and his granddaughter will be there to greet him. His mother will also be waiting at her garden gate when he finally gets home.

Facing extreme challenges on four continents

His long trip covered four continents. Along the way, Bushby dealt with deserts, mountains, jungles, and the frozen Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia.

He survived a stand off with a polar bear, entered crocodile infested water to avoid a guerilla war in Colombia, and was once rescued from an ice floe by a helicopter.

On Oct. 5, Bushby swam the English Channel to start the final leg of his trip. Since then, he has walked north while pushing his two wheeled supply cart, which he calls The Beast. He joked that Odysseus was a bit of an amateur, though he admitted he did not have to meet any giant Cyclops along his path.

Backing from Hull City

Hull City called on supporters to welcome Bushby to City Hall. The Premier League club shared a video recorded by Bushby after their 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town at the MKM Stadium.

In the clip, Bushby wore a Hull shirt while sitting on the other side of the Humber. He told fans he would be back in the city on Monday morning and hoped to see people there. He also mentioned that he plans to join fans inside the stadium to watch a match in the future.
