Another Lead Slipped Away

The New York Jets found another painful way to lose on Sunday, falling 38-33 to the Las Vegas Raiders at MetLife Stadium. New York built a 30-21 lead with 8:26 left in the third quarter and scored on its first six drives. Still, the defense could not hold the lead, giving up points on three of the next four possessions.

Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick offered a blunt assessment after the game. "I think we had some bad penalties, bad mistakes," Fitzpatrick said. "Jets being Jets." A team spokesman later claimed Fitzpatrick meant to say "Jets beating the Jets," but the frustration was clear. The team sits at 2-6 and has dropped three straight games, including a loss to the Miami Dolphins, who were winless before that meeting.

Red Zone Woes and Defensive Cracks

Offensively, New York gained a season high 439 yards. Braelon Allen rushed for 147 yards, Adonai Mitchell collected 142 receiving yards, and Geno Smith passed for 290 yards. Garrett Wilson caught six passes for 83 yards as well.

Even so, the offense struggled near the goal line, finishing with only two touchdowns on six trips inside the red zone. "It's all about being a sniper," Wilson said. "I've said that before and that's got to be the mentality. You get one shot at the scene."

Head coach Aaron Glenn watched his defense surrender 24 points after halftime. Glenn took over defensive duties this year, but his group has now yielded 92 points across the last three games. Kirk Cousins threw three touchdown passes for Las Vegas, with two going to Brock Bowers. Linebacker Demario Davis spoke plainly about the state of the locker room. "We have to claw our way out of the darkness," Davis said.

What it means for the next game

Aaron Glenn is running out of time to fix these persistent problems, with New York now sitting at 1-5 in one score games this season.

New York Jets at Kansas City Chiefs (NFL, Sun, 08 Nov): Kansas City Chiefs win 79%, New York Jets win 21%; projected score Kansas City Chiefs 27, New York Jets 18. Our safest pick: Chiefs to win.
