Kamario Taylor threw four touchdowns as Mississippi State overcame a 16-0 deficit to beat South Carolina 41-34 for their second straight road win.
Bulldogs Storm Back
Mississippi State overcame a slow start and a weather delay to secure a 41-34 victory over South Carolina on Saturday night. The Bulldogs fell behind 16-0 early in Columbia but rallied behind quarterback Kamario Taylor to open their conference schedule with a win.
It was the second straight road victory for Mississippi State, who beat Minnesota last week. The game started after an hour and 20 minute delay due to lightning, but the Bulldogs eventually found their rhythm.
Taylor overcame an interception on his first pass of the night to finish with 251 yards and four touchdowns. That performance tied his career high.
Taylor Sparks the Attack
The Gamecocks built their early lead with a touchdown pass from LaNorris Sellers and three field goals from Malik Orson. Once Taylor settled in, the Bulldogs offense came alive.
Taylor threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Sanfrisco Magee and a 43-yard scoring strike to Zion Ragins. He then found Marquis Johnson for a 23-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 23-21.
Mississippi State took the lead for good when Taylor threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Evans. Tailback Fluff Bothwell also helped carry the load, rushing for a season-high 115 yards. It was his second straight game over the 100-yard mark.
Costly Mistakes Hurt Gamecocks
South Carolina struggled to keep pace after losing the lead. Sellers threw interceptions on back-to-back drives inside his own territory. Mississippi State capitalized on those turnovers.
The Bulldogs turned one mistake into a field goal. They turned the other into a touchdown when receiver Gracen Harris threw a seven-yard pass to tight end Sam West.
Sellers finished the game with 282 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. South Carolina tried to fight back late. Matt Fuller scored on a six-yard run and caught a 25-yard touchdown pass to bring the score to 41-31. Orson added a 52-yard field goal with 52 seconds left, but it was not enough.
Moving Forward
The loss was South Carolina's sixth straight in SEC play. Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer expressed his disappointment after the game.
"I told the team that tonight would not define this football team," Beamer said. He added that the team would be defined by how they respond to the loss.
Mississippi State is now 3-0. They started 4-0 last season before losing their final eight games, but this road win shows they might have the strength to compete in the SEC this year.
