Pitt Outlasts Virginia Tech 35-33 to Stay Unbeaten
The Pittsburgh Panthers stayed undefeated with a 35-33 win over Virginia Tech, despite losing starting quarterback Mason Heintschel to injury.

Panthers Stay Perfect
The Pittsburgh Panthers are now 5-0 after a dramatic 35-33 win against the Virginia Tech Hokies. John Love missed a 36 yard field goal for the Hokies as time expired, sealing the victory for Pitt.
The Panthers fell behind 14-0 early but rallied back by scoring 21 unanswered points. The win marks Pitt's first road victory of the season and keeps them undefeated in ACC play at 2-0. Coach Pat Narduzzi hopes the win gets his unranked team some respect. "Wow. We've got a helluva football team," Narduzzi said after the game, urging voters to notice his team.
Overcoming Injury
The win did not come easy, especially after starting quarterback Mason Heintschel left the game with an injury on the fourth play of the second half. Heintschel was later seen on crutches.
Backup quarterback Holden Geriner stepped in and kept the offense moving. Geriner threw a 29 yard touchdown pass to Cataurus Hicks in the fourth quarter to put Pitt ahead 35-24. He stated after the game that he would be ready to lead if Heintschel faces a long absence. Damon Ferguson Jr. also helped the ground game with a 15 yard touchdown run, and Ja'Kyrian Turner added a rushing touchdown.
Hokies Fall Short
Virginia Tech dropped to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. The Hokies actually outgained Pittsburgh 499 to 295, but four costly turnovers hurt their chances. Pitt turned those mistakes into 14 points.
Hokies quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer threw for a career high of 434 yards. He set up the late field goal attempt with a 62 yard drive, but Love's kick went wide left. Virginia Tech coach James Franklin noted that his team had plenty of opportunities to win, stating there were 20 plays they could have made to avoid that final situation.
