A Century of History at San Siro

The legendary San Siro stadium is celebrating its 100th anniversary. It has been a temple of Italian football since Piero Pirelli built the ground in 1926. The very first match on September 19, 1926, saw Inter defeat AC Milan 6-3. Inter eventually moved into the stadium in 1947.

Over the decades, the stadium grew. The iconic middle tier with its spiral towers was added in 1955, raising the capacity from 35,000 to 85,000. It was renamed the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in 1980, and the famous top tier with its red girders was added for the 1990 World Cup.

Legends Say Goodbye

For legends like Alessandro Costacurta, who played 663 matches for AC Milan and won 24 trophies, the stadium is irreplaceable. Costacurta loved the stadium so much that when he retired, he rented it out for an 11 against 11 match with his friends, including his butcher and a local banker.

Demetrio Albertini, who played 406 matches for Milan, also remembers the intense emotions of the stadium. He noted that the fans are highly passionate and the emotions are incredibly intense.

Building a New Future

Both AC Milan and Internazionale have decided they can no longer stay in the current stadium because it is no longer fit for purpose. The clubs have chosen to build a new venue right next to the old one, which will eventually be knocked down. The design for their new home will be revealed before the end of this year.

Many fans and local figures wanted to keep the historic stadium, but the clubs need the extra income that a modern arena will bring.
