A Dream Start in Uyo

Al Ittihad forward George Ilenikhena made an instant impact on his international debut for Nigeria. The 20 year old scored the important equaliser in first half stoppage time during the Super Eagles' 2-1 victory over Madagascar. It was the opening match of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

With Victor Osimhen out injured, Nigeria coach Eric Chelle surprised many by starting Ilenikhena alongside Akor Adams. Madagascar took an early lead through Ehsan Kari, but Ilenikhena levelled the score just before the break after a pass from Alex Iwobi sliced through the defence. Fellow debutant Moses Usor then scored the winner in the second half.

Beating the Nerves

Ilenikhena admitted he felt some pressure and nerves before the match. Joining a squad with established international stars was intimidating for the young striker. However, the warm welcome from his teammates helped him settle down quickly.

"I was a little bit shy to see some of the players, but they were very good guys and I was calm when I saw them and talked to them," Ilenikhena said. Once he stepped onto the pitch, his focus shifted entirely to the game.

After his debut goal, the young forward is determined to keep his place in the team. He hopes to help Nigeria reduce their reliance on Osimhen for goals. He made his second appearance four days later, coming off the bench in a tough 3-0 loss away to Guinea-Bissau.
