Big plays carry Cincinnati to home win

Cincinnati pulled off a major upset on Saturday, defeating eighth ranked Texas Tech 37-24. It was the program's first home victory against a top ten team since 2006.

Running back Cole Tabb ran for a career high 173 yards and a touchdown, while adding a 4 yard scoring catch. Quarterback JC French IV set his own career mark by throwing four touchdown passes. After finishing the first quarter with minus six rushing yards, Cincinnati found its rhythm and ended the game with 252 yards on the ground.

Red Raiders stumble after early errors

Texas Tech fell to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 play. The loss ended their bid for a 7-0 start, something the program has not achieved since 2013. Early mistakes hurt the Red Raiders, as quarterback Will Hammond lost a fumble and took an intentional grounding penalty, forcing them to settle for field goals and a 6-3 lead.

Hammond finished with 227 passing yards and an interception. J'Koby Williams led the Red Raiders on the ground with 81 yards on 11 carries. Head coach Joey McGuire tried to keep his group focused on the College Football Playoff race this week, but Cincinnati fans made noise by chanting the name of Brendan Sorsby, whose transfer deal fell through earlier.

Bearcats control the second half

Cincinnati built a 24-6 advantage by halftime thanks to a 21 point second quarter. French threw scoring passes to Tabb, Malachi Henry, and tight end Lyviel Waters. A 51 yard run by Tabb set up the Waters score just before the break.

Texas Tech cut the lead to 24-15 in the third quarter when Peyton Morgan returned an intercepted pass 53 yards for a touchdown. The play was initially called back for targeting on Brice Pollock, but video review overturned the penalty. Cincinnati answered right back with an 80 yard drive capped by French's 17 yard touchdown pass to Larenzo Fenner. Tabb then locked up the win with a 58 yard touchdown run with six minutes remaining.
