A record night in Europe

Como delivered an incredible performance on Wednesday, beating Lens 9-1 in their Champions League League Phase match. The Italian club, coached by former Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, moved up to fourth place in the competition table with the massive away win.

The nine goals set a new record for the most goals scored away from home by any team in Champions League history. The victory also tied Bayern Munich for the most goals scored by a single team in any match in the competition, whether at home or away.

Douvikas and Paz lead the attack

Tasos Douvikas was the star of the night, scoring a hat trick for Como. He became only the third Greek international to score a Champions League hat trick. It was also the first European hat trick by any Como player, which makes sense given this is the first season the club has ever played in a UEFA competition.

Nico Paz played a major role in the attack as well. The Argentine star provided two assists and scored a quality goal in the 40th minute to make it 3-0. Lucas Da Cunha, Marc Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martin Baturina, and Matteo Papaccioli also scored against Lens, a side currently ninth in Ligue 1.

Matching historic margins

The eight goal win tied the record for the largest margin of victory in Champions League history. Liverpool won 8-0 against Besiktas in 2007, and Real Madrid matched that score against Malmo in 2015.

Through four European matches, Como have now scored 19 goals. That leaves them just one goal behind two time defending champions Paris Saint Germain.

At home in Serie A, Como sit fourth in the standings with 23 points after 10 games played. They are five points behind league leaders Lazio as they prepare to face second place Inter on Sunday.
