Anthem Actions Draw Sharp Words

Donald Trump called out LeBron James on Thursday, claiming the Philadelphia 76ers star disrespected the United States during the national anthem. The incident took place Tuesday in New York before Philadelphia played the Knicks at Madison Square Garden in their season opener.

James was lined up alongside his teammates before tipoff. While the rest of the team mostly stood still, James continued his warmups. He appeared to practice a golf swing and a jump shot during the song.

Trump shared the clip on social media and took aim at James directly. He stated that James was no good right from the beginning, calling him "a TOTAL DISGRACE" in his post. Trump also wrote that James "should apologize to all of those Great American Warriors and Heroes who died for the American Flag, and all that our Country stands for!"

History of Criticism

The exchange adds another chapter to the history between the two figures. Trump and James have been critical of each other for years, frequently trading public swipes.

Trump himself has faced scrutiny over anthem conduct. In 2020, a video surfaced from a Super Bowl watch party showing Trump waving his hands as if conducting an orchestra while the anthem played. In that brief clip, Trump also gestured toward other people while those around him stood still with their hands over their hearts.

James is 41 years old and is currently competing in his record 24th NBA season. Representatives for James did not respond to requests for comment about the social media remarks. After playing in New York, James prepared to take the court for his home debut with Philadelphia on Thursday night against Cleveland.
