Former Man United Star Demands End to VAR After Derby Drama
Peter Schmeichel has called for VAR to be scrapped after a controversial Erling Haaland goal decided the Manchester derby.

The Derby Controversy
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel wants VAR to be scrapped. His call comes after Erling Haaland scored a highly controversial winner for Manchester City in the derby at Old Trafford.
Haaland turned in a cross from Josko Gvardiol at the far post in the 60th minute. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but a VAR check overturned the decision. This happened even though City were down to 10 men after Phil Foden was sent off midway through the first half. The goal secured a 1-0 win for City.
Pro Ref later contacted Manchester United to acknowledge an error of judgment. They admitted that the VAR failed to recognise the likely impact of Enzo Fernandez's position and should have recommended an on-field review.
Schmeichel and Neville Speak Out
Schmeichel, who made 292 appearances for United, believes the technology is ruining the fan experience. The system was first introduced for the 2019-20 season.
"I wish that we could scrap VAR," Schmeichel said. He explained that referees and video technology have become the most important things in the game, which sucks the energy out of it. He noted that fans and players cannot even celebrate a goal straight away anymore. "It is such an annoyance and it is interfering with football," he added.
Former United defender Gary Neville also expressed his confusion. He said he needed the offside law explained to him and felt the officials got it wrong.
