Erling Haaland scored his 117th Premier League goal to secure a unique personal record in Manchester City's 5-3 victory over Sunderland.
Haaland Completes the Set
Manchester City defeated Sunderland 5-3 on Sunday in an entertaining, high scoring match. Erling Haaland scored the final goal of the game in the 81st minute. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but a VAR review overruled the decision and allowed the goal to stand.
This strike was highly significant for the Norwegian forward. Haaland has now scored against all 25 Premier League teams he has faced during his time with Manchester City.
Before Sunday, Sunderland was the only opponent he had failed to score against. Haaland had gone scoreless in two matches against them last season. The goal was his 117th overall in the Premier League.
Golden Boot Lead and City Scorers
Haaland now has five goals this season, which puts him at the very top of the Premier League Golden Boot standings. He leads Alexander Isak, who scored Liverpool's winner against Bournemouth on Sunday and has four goals so far.
City had several other players on the scoresheet before Haaland struck his late goal. Enzo Fernández and Rayan Cherki both found the net. Antoine Semenyo also scored twice to help keep City ahead in the match.
The victory also means City manager Enzo Maresca has won his first five Premier League games in charge of the club. He is only the sixth manager in history to achieve this feat, joining Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola, Craig Shakespeare, Maurizio Sarri, and Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
Brobbey Makes History in Defeat
Despite the loss, Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey had a historic afternoon. Brobbey scored a hat trick but still ended up on the losing side.
He is the first player to score a Premier League hat trick and lose the match since Roque Santa Cruz did so for Blackburn against Wigan in December 2007. He is also the first player in six years to score a treble against City, with Jamie Vardy being the last to do so.
Brobbey is the first Sunderland player to score a top flight hat trick since Jermain Defoe did so ten years ago. Additionally, he became only the fourth player in Premier League history to score a hat trick against the team starting the day at the top of the table.
