How Derrick Henry Mentors Jets Running Back Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen has leaned on Derrick Henry for advice while filling in for the injured Breece Hall.

A powerful mentorship in the Jets backfield
New York Jets running back Braelon Allen got a text message from Baltimore Ravens star Derrick Henry when he stepped into the starting role in Week 4. Henry told him to seize the opportunity, and Allen delivered. He rushed for 253 yards over a three game stretch while Breece Hall was injured.
The relationship started five years ago when Allen was a freshman at Wisconsin. He posted a photo wearing a shirt featuring Henry, which prompted Henry to reach out. The two now train together in Dallas during the offseason and speak at least once every week. Henry called Allen a big, physical kid and nicknamed him Manchild.
With Hall potentially returning against the Miami Dolphins, Allen will move back to a secondary role. Coach Aaron Glenn noted that Hall is still the starter, but Allen will keep getting carries after averaging 4.2 yards per carry this season.
Two minute struggles and trade deadline options
The Jets have struggled near the end of the first half. They have gone 15 straight games without scoring in the final two minutes of the second quarter, getting outscored 20 to 0 this season in those situations. Under Glenn, the team has been outscored 100 to 6 in the final two minutes of the first half across 23 games.
With the November 10 trade deadline approaching, general manager Darren Mougey could look to make moves. Defensive backs Nahshon Wright and Andre Cisco are both on one year deals, while edge rusher Will McDonald IV remains a potential trade target for other clubs.
Defense adds turnover tactics and Friday habits
On defense, the Jets have forced 10 fumbles this season, which ranks second in the league. Linebacker Jamien Sherwood used the Peanut Punch to strip the ball against New England recently. The defense also leads the NFL with five unblocked sacks.
Off the field, defensive tackle Harrison Phillips started a Friday tradition by wearing a polo shirt under his practice jersey. Up to 30 players and coaches now join in to keep a professional focus during light workouts.
