A Perfect Start in Kansas City
The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a perfect 2-0 start this season, and new running back Kenneth Walker III is a major reason why. In Sunday night's 33-30 overtime victory against the Indianapolis Colts, Walker racked up 178 all purpose yards.
His performance, alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes' 382 passing yards, helped the offense secure a hard fought win at Arrowhead Stadium. Walker now leads all NFL skill position players with 369 all purpose yards through the first two weeks of the season.
Mahomes was quick to praise his new teammate after the game. He noted that Walker's running ability forces opposing defenses to account for the ground game, which opens up the entire offense.
Breaking Tackles and Exhausting Defenses
Walker finished the game with 30 touches and forced 15 missed tackles against a tough Colts defense. That broke his previous career high of 14 missed tackles, which he set just one week earlier against the Denver Broncos.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid acknowledged how difficult the matchup was. Reid said the Colts packed five guys on the line of scrimmage, making it a tough night, but noted that Walker earned every bit of his yards.
Walker is the first Chiefs player since Larry Johnson in 2005 to record 175 or more all purpose yards in consecutive games. The running back credited his late game strength to the team's conditioning during long training camp practices.
Opening Up the Passing Game
Walker's impact goes beyond his rushing numbers. His presence on the field made the play action passing game highly effective for Mahomes, who completed a career high 14 play action passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns.
Tight end Travis Kelce also benefited from the attention Walker drew, leading the team with 101 receiving yards and a touchdown. Mahomes explained that Walker's running style helps get Kelce into favorable matchups.
Walker also showed his value as a receiver, catching a short play action pass in overtime and running for a 22 yard gain. That play set up kicker Harrison Butker for the game winning 40 yard field goal.
