Kristaps Porzingis Steps Away From Basketball to Focus on Health
Kristaps Porzingis is stepping away from the NBA due to health issues, but Golden State may still trade his contract.

Porzingis Takes Time Away from the Court
Golden State Warriors center Kristaps Porzingis announced that he is stepping away from basketball. The big man has not played for the team this season. He explained that his body is physically unable to play at the level he expects.
Two days before Golden State held its first practice, Porzingis called general manager Mike Dunleavy to say he would not report. The team let him stay away for two weeks before holding a meeting in early October. Porzingis left the team again after that meeting and decided to step away from the league entirely.
"I'm doing good but I know what it takes and I'm not where I want to be to perform at the level I expect of myself," Porzingis wrote.
Contract Details and Potential Trade Options
Porzingis signed a two year, 40 million dollar contract extension in late June. He intended to play this season, but his body did not respond well while preparing for training camp.
Even though he is stepping away, this is not an official retirement. Golden State can still use his 20 million dollar salary in a trade before the deadline in February. The Warriors have stopped paying his salary, and neither Porzingis nor the players association is fighting that decision.
The Warriors do not plan to void the deal as they look for trade options. Porzingis is open to a move. Next season, only 3 million dollars of his contract is guaranteed. A rival team could trade for him to save money through a buyout.
"I want to show the utmost respect for the Golden State Warriors and work with them to find a solution that makes sense," Porzingis wrote.
Health Struggles and Team Status
This decision comes after ongoing health issues. Porzingis caught a viral illness while playing in Boston two seasons ago. He has also suffered multiple leg injuries over his 11 year career.
The Warriors have built a strong start without him. Golden State holds a 6-3 record and is currently on a six game winning streak.
