A Dedicated Mom on the Road
Linda Fletcher has taken to the open road to make sure she never misses a game. The mother of Miami Hurricanes running back Mark Fletcher Jr. has driven nearly 60,000 miles over the past four years to watch her son play college football. She developed a fear of flying after having a panic attack on an airplane four years ago, leading her to travel exclusively by ground.
Her travels gained national attention last year as Miami made a run to the national title game. Now she travels in a customized RV named Betty. Former star Michael Irvin helped connect her with an RV dealership in Texas to get the vehicle. Irvin also suggested putting an airbrushed image of her late husband, Mark Sr., on the door to protect her during her travels.
Life Inside the RV
The vehicle features home games listed on one side and road games on the other side. It acts as the backdrop for a weekly series called Fetching Fletchers. On a trip from Florida to a game at Clemson, South Carolina, Linda carried 10 passengers. The group included her son Keith, her daughter J'Sha, her three year old granddaughter Bri Bri, and her friend Maria Cephus.
Along the way, Linda likes to sightsee with her family. They stopped in St. Augustine for a haunted house tour and scheduled a visit to a wildlife sanctuary in Jacksonville. Linda uses these trips to create memories for her family that she missed out on as a child. Raised by her father and grandmother after her biological mother gave her up at birth, she values the quiet moments of reflection while driving.
