Massive Police Presence Set for Millwall and West Ham Derby

The London Metropolitan Police are deploying 400 officers for Saturday's Championship match between Millwall and West Ham. This is the first time the two rivals have met on the pitch in 14 years. The derby has a long history of fan violence, and authorities are taking no chances with safety. Along with the large number of officers, the police will use horses, dog units, and live facial recognition technology to monitor the crowds.

Dispersal orders are also in place. The Met Police issued a Section 35 dispersal order covering the area from Tower Bridge to Blackheath. The City of London Police followed with a similar order running from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. GMT. These orders give officers the authority to remove anyone causing trouble.

A Bitter History

This London rivalry has a reputation for trouble. During their last meeting in 2009 in the League Cup, violence flared at Upton Park. That match saw 13 arrests, three pitch invasions, and the stabbing of a Millwall fan. West Ham received a fine of 115,000 pounds after being found guilty of crowd disturbances.

A Met Police spokesperson said that the security plan is to keep fans and the public safe. They added that officers will not hesitate to act if there is disorderly behaviour. Met officers are working alongside the British Transport Police and both football clubs.
